Conjunctions

Conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect and to relate words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. There are two kinds of conjunctions, coordinating and subordinating.

Coordinating conjunctions connect words and word groups.
List of coordinating conjunctions:

• and
• but
• for
• so
• yet
• or
• nor

Subordinating conjunctions mark a dependent clause and connect it with a main clause
List of subordinating conjunctions:

• until
• since
• if
• when
• as if
• as
• although
• after
• because
• before
• while

And so on...

 

Cousin to the conjunction is the correlatives
Correlatives are used in pairs. Pairing these properly is essential in good parallel structure in compositions.
List of correlatives:

• both......and
• either....or
• neither....nor
• not only....but also
• whether....or

These pairs are listed in order. They should be used in pairs and in the order presented here meaning the first word in each pair is to be used first in a sentence.

Two examples using either ... or:

Either they obey the manager or they get fired.

They either obey the manager or  get fired.
